2015 FIFA Beach Soccer WC: 13-time champion, Brazil, eliminated

Espinho, Portugal (PANA) - Russia on Thursday sent Brazil packing from the 2015 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Portugal, beating the Beach Soccer powerhouse 6-5 in a quarter-final match here.

Brazil has won the title a record 13 times (1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009), runner up once (2011), two-time third-place finisher (2005, 2013) and finished fourth one in 2001.

For its part, Russia, which qualified for the semi-final on account of that victory, had won the title twice (2011 and 2013).

Also through to the semi-finals Thursday are host Portugal, which dismissed Switzerland 7-3, Italy, 3-2 winner against Japan and Tahiti, which pipped Iran 5-4.

The semi-final fixtures on Saturday are as follows:-
Italy vs Tahiti
Portugal vs Russia

All but one of the qualifiers have won accolades at previous world cups.

Portugal won the cup in 2001, finished runner up in 1999, 2002 and 2005, bronze medallist in 2003, 2004, 2008, 2009 and 2011 and finished fourth in 2006.

The Italians have never won the cup but finished second in 2008, third in 1996 and fourth in 1995 and 2004.

Japan finished fourth in 2000 and 2005, while Tahiti has finished fourth once (2013).

Iran has appeared in this competition six times and its best previous performance was its ouster in the quarter-finals in 2013.

Its biggest win, though, was a 20-0 victory against Philippines on 22 January 2013 while its worst defeat was the 2-7 loss to Bahrain in Dubai on 25 May 2006.
