2014 FIFA WC: Nigeria loses 2-3 to Argentina but qualifies for Round of 16

Porto Alegre, Brazil (PANA) - Nigeria Wednesday qualified for the round of 16 at the ongoing 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil although it lost 2-3 to Argentina here in a group F match.

The loss left Nigeria on four points and in second place behind group leaders Argentina with the maximum 9 points.

PANA reports that Nigeria also owed its qualification to Bosnia Hercegovina which beat Iran 3-1. Both teams exited the competition - Bosnia with three points and Iran with one.

PANA also reports that Nigeria had to survive the five-goal thriller in what was easily an Argentine city domiciled in Brazil, and moved ahead to the next round for the first time in 16 years.

It was a survival for the Eagles who also had no fewer than 40,000 of the officially declared 43,285 spectators to contend with. They provided the tonic for the Argentines who were also inspired by skipper Lionel Messi.

The atmosphere was very electrifying. Argentine supporters had besieged the city the previous night, some came by road from their country that it was impossible for most Nigerian followers to secure hotels in Porto Alegre.

Most had to go to the neighbouring town of Sapiranga which is nearly an hour drive to Porto Alegre.
The Super Eagles will now have to go to the Brazilian capital city, Brasilia, for their round of 16 encounter.

Below is how group F ended after the last matches.
