2013 AFCON: Mali suffers most humiliating defeats in semi-finals

Durban, South Africa (PANA) - Mali, beaten 4-1 by the Super Eagles of Nigeria Wednesday night at the ongoing 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, has an unenviable record of conceding the most goals in the semi-finals of the tournament.

The 4-1 defeat suffered in the hands of the Super Eagles was not the first time the team will be beaten that silly at that stage.

At the 1994 finals, after beating host Tunisia 2-0 in the opening match, Mali slumped 4-0 to Zambia in the semi-finals.

Also in 2002, the country was beaten 3-0 by Cameroon at home in the semi-finals.

Two years later, Mali lost 4-0 to Morocco in the semi final in Tunisia.

The only time Mali had survived a semi-final match was at its debut appearance in the competition, when the  team beat Zaire (now DR Congo) 4-3 after extra time.

Thus till date, Mali has conceded 18 goals in five semi-final matches.
