2,798 Moroccans suffering from AIDS

Rabat- Morocco (PANA) -- About 2,798 Moroccans have been afflicted by the dreaded AIDS disease since 1986, sources close to the Moroccan health ministry told PAN A here Monday.
According to the sources, the figure is low because the kingdom remains a countr y with a "low level of prevalence" of the infection.
A communique published here, Monday, on the occasion of the celebration of the W ord Aids Day, indicated that the level of prevalence of the infection was 0.
008% for a population estimated at over 30 mil lion.
It called on Moroccans to redouble their vigilance against the epidemic.
The sources said the health ministry had unveiled "A strategic national plan of fight AIDS", adding that a number of NGOs in the country and other agencies were collaborating in the efforts to fight the scourge.
It said the Moroccan government took drastic actions between 2005 and 2008 to se nsitize the public and prevent the spread of the disease particularly among youn g people and women.
On screening for the virus, the number of beneficiaries has risen from 10,000 to 43,000 people, according to the communiqué.
The World Aids Day was celebrated in Morocco by musicians who sang under the ban ner "Pact of the artists against AIDS".
