FIFA U-17 WC: Poor outing for African teams

Lagos, Nigeria (PANA) - With the ongoing FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Nigeria now at the quarter-final stage, only one of the five African teams that came to the t ournament remains in contention, PANA reported Friday.

Thursday night's ouster of Burkina Faso, which lost 4-1 to Spain in the second r ound, left host and defending champion Nigeria as the only African team in the c o mpetition.

Algeria, African champion Gambia and Malawi did not make it beyond the round-rob in first round.

Africa's performance at the current tournament is worse than what was recorded a t the last edition in South Korea in 2007, when two African teams - Ghana and Ni g eria - made it to the last four.

Ghana lost to Spain in the semi-finals and Nigeria went ahead to beat Spain in t he final and win the tournament.
