"We will win the World Cup one day" - Uganda President Museveni

Kampala, Uganda (PANA) - Ugandan president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni says the Cranes will qualify and lift the FIFA World Cup one day.

Museveni was speaking as they hosted the Coca Cola delegation during the FIFA World Cup trophy tour to Kampala, the Ugandan capital,

Museveni lifted aloft the FIFA World Cup trophy for the second time since 2009, saying his country takes football seriously.

“Uganda is a footballing country and we hope that at one time, we shall win this cup and retain it in this country,” said Museveni.

“This may take a few years considering that the teams from developed countries train from advanced grounds while Uganda still has raw talent.

“This is a rare opportunity for Uganda, this visit is also symbolic in that it shows FIFA’s confidence in Uganda by recognizing our competitive abilities, however, Uganda with raw talent almost qualified but narrowly lost heading to Russia.

“It will also draw attention to our country and boost tourism.

“Uganda is now ranked 71st out of the 211 FIFA ountries but we plan on improving the ranking hopefully by 2022.

“I congratulate Uganda Cranes the job well done in the FIFA World Cup 2018 Qualifiers.”

Uganda is among the ten African countries where local fans will have an opportunity to interact with the coveted trophy.

The trophy was flown into Uganda alongside a host of FIFA officials at the Entebbe International Airport on Monday, ahead of a two-day tour of the country, which will allow soccer fans to spend time with it and take photographs.

President Museveni later graced the event as the trophy got set to tour the country for the second time since making its maiden visit in 2009.
