French president to address AU summit

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA) - French President Nicholas Sarkozy will be the guest of honour at the 16th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU), scheduled to be held here 30-31 January 2011, the AU Commission announced Tuesday.

AU Commission Secretary Jean Mfasoni told journalists that Sarkozy would be given the floor to address his peers at the opening session, which will take place at the conference centre of the UN Economic Commission for Africa.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, League of Arab States Secretary-General Amr Moussa and Palestine leader Mahmoud Abbas will also address the summit.

Other dignitaries due here to attend the session as observers include chief executives of the Commonwealth, the Francophonie and heads of various UN agencies.

According to Mfasoni, some 60 non-member states will have observer delegations at the summit, "a signal that the AU is being taken as a very important partner in world affairs."

The next ordinary summit will take place towards the end of June or early July 2011 in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.
